10 Ways to Sleep Better

I believe we have all come across times where we just can’t seem to fall asleep. Currently that’s me, so this is why I’m here. I’m going to share some things that help me sleep. I’m not saying everything here is going to help you, but I suggest at least trying a few. So let’s jump right in.

1. No Caffeine

Don’t panic I’m not telling you to get rid of all your caffeine. Most of us survive the day on this stuff whether it be coffee or energy drinks. Now what I am telling you is to plan when you drink this stuff you don’t want to drink it in the afternoon. Chances are you most definitely are going to be awake for awhile, because for people like me caffeine doesn’t kick in till about an hour after you’ve had it. Your caffeine energy boost can last up to 4 hours, so if you plan to go to bed early the latest I recommend is 2p.m.

2. Reduce Naps

We all love a god nap, but depending when and how long these naps are chances are you just gained all your energy back. For some of this it may not be true. For myself I can nap all day and still sleep from 9pm-9am. Limit yourself to 1 nap a day for about 20-30 minutes. And I know this can be really hard, but you have to do it. Get up off your butt and move around. When you decide to nap for over an hour your brain starts to fall into a deep sleep and it can and will be impossible to wake yourself up. Thus making it harder for you to fall asleep at night

3. Dim the Lights

Sometimes it’s the lights that get us. If you are afraid of the dark I suggest buying either lights you can dim or color changing  ones. Imagine you are outside in the sun and it’s so bright it can be hard to focus. Well this is the exact same thing, but what you are focusing on is sleep. This bright light is like getting water splashed in your face. Test it out close your eyes in a bright environment and then a dark environment. Which one made you feel more relaxed? The darker space right? So do you get what I’m hinting at?

4. Eat Sooner

I personally love late night snacks and movies and I find it hard to not eat late at night. I realized though that every once in a while when I decided to eat early it made me kind of tired, so I looked into it. What happens when you eat early is your body has more time to process your food, stabilize your blood sugar, and it helps you get stuff done right before bed. I mean it doesn’t force you to do stuff, but it gives you that small energy boost that allows you to get some work done before bed whether it be a project or just plain old watching a movie.

5. Get Comfy

I think this one is a no brainier. The issue is what if you can’t get comfortable? Well here are multiple things you can try out:

1. Adjust the room temperature where you like it

2. Grab some extra pillows- sometimes it feels nice to have that extra support around you

3. Get soft blankets and or pillows

4. Turn on that fan- sometimes it just feels good to be under blanks while the fan is on. You just have to experience it

5. Try different sleeping positions

6. Relax your mind beforehand like reading a book or watching a movie

6. Adjust your Pattern

Get yourself in the habit of going to bed and getting up at the same time every single day. For example: Go to bed at 9p.m. and set morning alarms for 7a.m. That’s a good 10 hours of sleep you will be getting. Gaining a sleeping habit does take some work so make sure you are persistent about this. And look back at the other ideas I listed something will help you, I promise You just need to try out everything at least once.

7. Try Exercise

Honestly I believed exercise could only benefit you throughout the day, but boy was I wrong. You don’t have to work out to the max, start of easy and progress from there. It’s better if you do this in the morning, because straight after a work out most people feel more awake and active and then through the rest of the day your body starts to calm down which can make you tired earlier than usual. And no I don’t mean you will be falling asleep at work. I’m talking about all you late nighters who go to bed around 12am-3am if not later. Give everything a try before you judge it.

8. Noise Control

This depends on the person you are. Some of us can’t sleep unless there’s noise while others need absolute silence. For me I need silence. You should know by know which one makes you sleep better. Now if you watch a show before bed, turn it off, it is very likely that you are going to hear something happening in that show that makes you want to look at the screen. Avoid this, be strong. Instead I suggest maybe a song without words or a rain forest background. Some type of sound that is soothing to your ears, because everyone is different.

9. Rest your Eyes

It takes the average person about 10-15 minutes to fall asleep and this can seem forever when you are laying there doing absolutely nothing, but do it. Just close your eyes and avoid that device next to you. If you have to move your phone across the room chances are you will be too lazy to get out of bed and get it.

10. Think Positive

You are lying in bed wanting to just grab your phone, because this whole falling asleep thing just isn’t working for you or you are thinking about something bad that happened today and want to take your mind off of it, well here’s a thought, think positive. Think about a future you plan to create for yourself or others. Think about what or who you are grateful for. Negative thoughts put you in a sour mood which make it hard to fall asleep. It’s the same as trying to work with a bad attitude, things just run smoother in your brain when you get that positive mindset.

1 thought on “10 Ways to Sleep Better”

  1. I really enjoyed reading these tips! I am a mother of 3 and you would think after early rise, and a day full of activities that I would be able to lay my head down on a pillow and be out cold. NOPE! After my children are finally asleep, I work on my online business and even after I’m finished I still cannot shut down. I am going to try to workout before bed! I don’t know why I have never thought of this! I am always trying to fit in my workout throughout my day but with the hassle of chores, kids and errands its a no-go. This may be just what I need! Happy I came across this article! 🙂
